Prohibited and Restricted Items when Sending to South Africa

There are certain things that are not allowed to be brought into South Africa, and others which can only be imported with certain restrictions. In much the same way, there are a variety of items that won't carry. You can see our list of restricted items here – if something is on that list, we will not ship it under any circumstances. In much the same vein, South Africa has its own set of goods that are prohibited for import, above and beyond the goods that prohibits:

  • Counterfeit goods of any description
  • Unlicensed copies of copyrighted goods
  • Fireworks and other explosives
  • Firearms and other weapons that are fully automatic
  • Illicit or poisonous substances
  • Prison-made goods

There are also a variety of goods that can only be brought into South Africa with the correct permit or permission from a relevant authority:

  • Gold coins
  • Medicines
  • Herbal products
  • Animal and plant products
  • Unprocessed gold, diamonds and other minerals
  • Firearms and weaponry

Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of all prohibited and restricted goods. To see a complete directory, please visit the South African Customs Site.
