Customs in Japan

Every package that is sent to Japan must pass through customs before it is delivered to the recipient. This allows for duties and customs to be applied, though if the parcel is worth less than 10,000 yen no fees will be charged. Because of this threshold, it’s important to properly declare the value of your goods.

In fact, properly declaring your goods is vital to ensure that there are no problems when it comes to clearing customs. Make sure to use the full name and value of the goods on your customs forms to minimise the risk of problems.

Japan is half a world away and, by the time your parcel arrives there it will have been handled by dozens of people and multiple machines. If you’d like your parcel to arrive in the same condition that it leaves, it’s very important to properly package your goods.

To make sure that there aren’t any problems, there are three key points to keep in mind when packing your goods for shipping:

Safely packaging a parcel for international shipping

Wrap all your items individually before putting them in the box, then suspend them in packing materials, such as bubble wrap or foam peanuts, so that they’re at least 6cm from the box edge. Nothing should be able to move around inside once the box is closed.

Use proper parcel tape and wrap it three times around your parcel in a Union Jack pattern so that all joins and corners are covered. When attaching your label many couriers carry clear document wallets that you can use.
