Customs in the Netherlands

As the Netherlands is a part of the European Union, you won’t need to worry about paying duties and taxes on the packages that you’re sending, as long as you’re sending from within the EU. In fact, you don’t even have to worry about shipping paperwork at all. On the other hand, if you’re shipping from outside of Europe, keep in mind that duties and taxes will be levied on all parcels worth more than €150, which will have to clear customs.

Customs paperwork is one of the most important parts of shipping internationally. The trick is to make sure that you don’t make the mistake of declaring your goods in a general fashion; declare “wooden animal toys” instead of just “toys” for example.

Packaging your Parcel

Shipping to the Netherlands might not sound like a lengthy journey, but your parcel will still change hands multiple times on the way. With so many people passing your parcel along, it’s important to make sure that your goods are properly protected.

When packaging your goods, there are three main points to consider:

1. USE A STRONG BOX

Whatever it is you’re sending, your box is the first line of defence. It’s best to use a new box, as older boxes are liable to burst or get crushed during the shipping process. suggests using a double corrugated cardboard box for goods that weight more than 10kg.

Safely packaging a parcel for international shipping

2. PACK TIGHTLY

Wrap all your goods individually in wrapping material like bubble wrap first, then place them in the box and surround with packaging. Use plenty of packaging pellets or paper to support your goods, so no part should be touching the walls of your box and they are held firmly in place.

3. SEAL IT UP

Don’t skimp when you’re picking your packaging tape – strong tape can help shore up any weaknesses your box might have. Wrap around the main body of your box three times, paying special attention to seams and corners, the weakest part of your box.
