Customs in New Zealand

When you send to New Zealand, every package passes through customs to be inspected and taxed. This means that many parcels have duties and taxes applied to them before they are cleared. This is not always the case however, and parcels worth less than NZ$400 should pass through customs without having to pay fees.

Customs paperwork is one of the most important elements of sending internationally, so be sure that it is properly filled in. It’s vital to be clear and declare everything in your shipment.

Collection & Delivery

Packages being collected and delivered

Courier Collection

If you book your shipment in good time, we can pick-up your parcel on the same day in many locations in New Zealand and the UK. Large and heavy parcels require an advance booking however, and you may be required to help your courier load your shipment.

If you’re not available for a collection, you can often use a drop-off point. These are local businesses that you can drop your package off at when it’s convenient for you. It’s cheaper than shipping directly too, saving you more money.

New Zealand Delivery

Unless you’ve chosen to use one of our timed delivery services, your parcel will be delivered between 9am and 7pm on normal working days. We will make three attempts for all deliveries to New Zealand. With our timed delivery services, you can narrow your delivery window, so the person you’re sending to doesn’t have to wait in all day.

Several of our partner carriers may leave your package in a safe place without requiring proof of delivery. If you must have a signature, please use the upgrade option ‘Signature required’ on our ‘select service page’.

Parcel Tracking

have the safest hands in the business, and you can be sure of that with our parcel tracking service. We update your tracking as the package travels, so you always know what progress it has made. In the unlikely event that there is an issue with your parcel, we’ll get in touch to explain the issues.

To follow your parcel’s journey live, all you have to do is log in to your account or enter your tracking number into our tracking tool and we’ll show you where your parcel is, and its current status.

Sending Gifts to New Zealand

When sending gifts to New Zealand, if the gift you’re sending is worth less than NZ$400, duties and taxes will not be applied. If the gift is worth more, then you will only be taxed on the amount that is above NZ$400.

For example, if you were sending a present worth NZ$1,000 to Auckland from the UK, when your package arrived at New Zealand customs you would only be charged duties and taxes on NZ$600 of its value.

Sending Luggage or
Excess Baggage to New Zealand

If you are moving or returning to New Zealand after being out of the country for 21 months or more (or are moving for the first time), your goods may be eligible for exemptions to duties and customs. If this is the case, you can import without having to pay customs fees or tax as long as you meet certain criteria.

Apart from the requirement for being out of the country for 21 months before importing, you will also need to fulfil the following criteria:

  • When the effects arrive, you live in New Zealand and you can present documentation authorising your residence – such as your passport.
  • The goods you’re importing must be used – brand new items don’t qualify for concessions.
  • The goods are for your personal use, and you don’t plan to sell, gift to or exchange goods with anyone else.

If you’re returning home from a holiday or short trip, this exemption doesn’t apply, and you’ll likely have to pay duties and taxes on your items.

Important points of note:

  1. Personal effects are only considered as such when they are goods that are used by an individual, such as clothing.
  2. Goods that are used by multiple people are considered household effects, and are treated as completely separate items during the customs clearance process.
  3. In order for your personal effects to pass through customs without any problems, you may need to complete additional documentation.

When shipping goods around the world, it’s best to use a new box. Older boxes can be concealing weaknesses that could end up causing them to burst or be crushed. Using a strong, double corrugated cardboard box can make all the difference.

Safely packaging a parcel for international shipping

2. PACK IT CAREFULLY

Make sure to wrap your goods individually in a material like bubble wrap before placing them in your box. Then surround them in packaging material like Styrofoam, making sure that they do not touch any part of the box walls and don’t move when the box is shaken.

3. TAPE IT UP

By using strong packing tape you can further reinforce your box. Tape it three times around your box in a Union Flag pattern, covering the corners and the seams. Remove all old labelling that may be on your box, and place your new label to be clearly visible.
